As it turned out, really damn fast.

All it had taken was for Cedric to publicly announce that they had finally found the solution for both the mana surge and the grizzik attacks, and that all that was left was for the people to do what they did best: getting ore out of the cliff side. Aldric had been stunned at the townsfolk’s’ response. He’d expected at least a little skepticism about a plan they barely understood proposed by people who didn’t even live there. But the moment Cedric finished addressing the crowd at the town square, workers were already packing up their tools and heading off for the mines in teams, a renewed sense of purpose carrying them on ever faster. Hells, even people Aldric was certain weren’t miners picked up the same tools and headed off, not content to wait around while others worked.

The repeated attacks and magical disaster happening right on their doorstep likely spurred them to work harder, but Aldric thought it might be more than that. Ever since the walls had been created and the grizziks diverted from attacking people, there had been a renewed sense of hope that hadn’t been in the air before. The people of Vultath had been living in constant fear and uncertainty for almost a year, and likely even before then, thanks to the uncertainty of the civil war. Now there was a light at the end of the long tunnel they’d been stuck in, and they were determined to dig themselves out. Aldric wouldn’t take all the credit, but even being partially responsible for that change in their outlook felt good.

Cedric had originally quoted Aldric a month for all the materials he would need. The people of Vultath smashed that prediction in sixteen days. Aldric had everything he would need to make the needed enchantments faster than he ever would’ve thought possible. It was almost too fast.

Aldric was the only sorcerer on hand capable of carving out and setting the runes into the metal. Orthrus just didn’t have the skill set or understanding of the spell for that. On top of that, the pipes still had to be crafted by a single man before they were ready to be worked on. Even there, the people surprised him. They didn’t stop for a much-needed break after pushing themselves night and day. Instead, they devoted the rest of their time to making the smith’s and Aldric’s jobs as easy as possible.

Aldric’s friends had been handling delivery of the finished pipes to the greenhouse initially, but others quickly started pitching in until they completely took it over. The miners may not have known the first thing about magic, but they could haul and cart heavy materials like nobody’s business. A generous pile of pipes had built up outside of the greenhouse, and a team of eight people, including Gill, camped out in Aldric’s workshop and waited for him to finish one before hauling it off and dragging in the next.
